Pope Benedict thanks group of children visiting the Vatican

VATICAN CITY, Italy – Pope Benedict XVI received a delegation of children from Italian Catholic Action this morning in the Vatican. The pope also exchanged greetings with them and moved on with his message.

The Holy Father thanked the visiting group and then went on to express his message on a theme they have been studying on this past year: the invitation made to Bartimaeus in the Bible, “Arise, He is calling”.

Pope Benedict visits prisoners and answers several questions from them

ROME, Italy – During Pope Benedict’s visit to Rome’s Rebibbia prison, he gave a short speech to the inmates and afterwards responded to questions from six of the inmates who were gathered in the prison’s Church of Our Father.

Federico, who is an inmate from the prison infirmary, told the pope that people say “ferocious things” regarding the inmates.

“We have fallen and hurt people,” he told Pope Benedict. “We have lost our freedom, but we ask you to help ensure we don’t lose our dignity.”

VATICAN CITY, Italy – Pope Benedict XVI discussed Jesus’ prayer life during his address to the general audience on November 30, also adding the way it challenges Christians to have a devoted time for prayer.

Pope Benedict told pilgrims who were at the Paul VI Hall that Jesus “by his own example most fully reveals the mystery of Christian prayer.”

“The Lord’s own prayer life,” he mentioned, “was like a hidden canal irrigating his life … and guiding him with increasing firmness to the total gift of self, in keeping with the loving plan of God the Father.”

VATICAN CITY, Italy – New York priest Msgr. Charles Brown is now the newly appointed Irish nuncio by Pope Benedict XVI to serve as his new official representative to Ireland.

This announcement of Msgr. Charles Brown’s appointment last November 26 had been warmly accepted among many Church leaders as relations between the country and the Vatican have reached their lowest point since the two states had established diplomatic relations in 1929.

Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan of New York commended Msgr. Brown in his message to Catholic News Agency last November 24, referring to him as a “young, vibrant, very theologically savvy but pastorally sensitive guy.”

“Christ urges us to combine humility with our charitable service towards our brothers and sisters. Indeed, may we always imitate his perfect example of service in our daily lives,” the Pope addressed to pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square during his Sunday Angelus address on October 30.

Pope Benedict shared his personal reflection regarding the gospel passage of the day stating that Jesus tells the apostles to “do everything” the Pharisees teach as they “sit in Moses’ seat,” but not “to do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.”

Pope Benedict XVI sends message to Angolan bishops

VATICAN CITY, Italy – Pope Benedict XVI has reportedly encouraged the Catholic Church in Angola to establish a family life while fighting witchcraft and tribalism.

“Christians breathe the spirit of his time and are under pressure from the mores of their society but, by the grace of baptism, are called to give up harmful prevailing trends and to go against the current, guided by the spirit of the Beatitudes,” stated the Pope on October 29.

The Angolan bishops are presently in Rome for their “ad limina” visit of which they update the Pope and also the Vatican on the Catholic Church in the states of southwestern Africa.

VATICAN CITY, Italy – Pope Benedict XVI had a meeting earlier today with the other delegates who attended during yesterday’s World Day for Peace in Assisi gathering and he further mentioned that the meeting really showed how “genuine the desire for peace and the good of others is.”

“In a certain sense, this gathering is representative of the billions of men and women throughout our world who are actively engaged in promoting justice and peace,” explained Pope Benedict.

ASSISI, Italy – Along with other religious leaders with Pope Benedict XVI on pilgrimage to Assisi, he stated that “people who are suspicious of religion cannot be blamed for questioning God’s existence when they see believers use religion to justify violence.”

“All their struggling and questioning is, in part, an appeal to believers to purify their faith so that God, the true God, becomes accessible,” the pope expressed on October 27 during an interfaith gathering in the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels.

Marking the 25th anniversary of the first Assisi interfaith gathering for peace, hosted by Blessed John Paul II in 1986, Pope Benedict has invited many other religious leaders.

“At this time, our thoughts turn to the people of Turkey hard hit by the earthquake, which has caused heavy loss of life, many missing and extensive damage,” Pope Benedict stated during his general audience in Vatican City’s Paul VI Hall on October 26.
