Pope Francis to appoint new cardinals

VATICAN CITY, Rome — It has been on the news that Pope Francis will be appointing 19 new cardinals in the coming month, including churchmen from Haiti and Burkina Faso, reflecting his commitment to the poor.

Wearing red hats and robes, cardinals are the most senior clergymen in the Roman Catholic Church below the Pope.

Sixteen of the new appointees are under 80 years old, which make them eligible to enter a conclave to elect the next Pope.

News reports say the new cardinals will be formally instated at a ceremony, known as a consistory, on the 22nd of February.
