Customers at Subway in the Goldens Bridge shopping center may soon be able to complement their sandwiches by going next door for some frozen yogurt or ice cream.

At the Planning Board meeting on Tuesday, June 26, property manager Robert Lauria presented a plan for Maggie May’s Frozen Yogurt & Ice Cream to add a store in the 550-square-foot space next to Subway on the north end of the plaza.

The spot has been vacant since Wags and Wiggles dog grooming left last fall and Subway moved into part of that space this spring.

Greek yogurt is flying off supermarket shelves in Canada after conquering the U.S. market. The high-protein content, natural ingredients and creamy taste have made it a hit with consumers in a health-conscious culture.

Canadian producers have doubled and tripled facilities to meet increasing demand and grocery retailers have experienced temporary shortages, leaving consumers scrambling for the latest holy grail of a healthy diet.

I was as shocked as you are, when I looked at this first-ever glimpse of a new dish from the world-famous kitchen of Noma, in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Noma is the Michelin two-star that has zoomed to the top of many international lists as the world’s best restaurant. Chef-owner Rene Redzepi has created in Copenhagen a new Nordic cuisine, yes…but he has also been honing a style you might call “primitivist modern.”

Maricopa, AZ — On June 21, 2012, the Maricopa Historical Society held a successful fundraising event at Yogurt Jungle located at 21101 N. John Wayne Parkway. Sharilynn Hewitt, (owner of Yogurt Jungle), donated 20% (pre-tax) of the yogurt sales amount to the Maricopa Historical Society.

Historical Society President Brenda Hermanson had made a flier available over the Internet for several weeks before the fundraiser and also distributed them during the event, which lasted from 11:00 A.M. until 10:00 P.M.

Richmond, VA—Thieves stole a children’s game from the outside of a local yogurt shop, and now, the store’s employees are speaking out about the crime.

The Sweetfrog Yogurt Shop, located near Virginia Commonwealth University, opened just a few weeks ago. The goal of the shop is to make the area a better place. A representative of the company says, “We strive to be a family oriented yogurt shop and were hoping that this would help make this area better.”

But Tuesday night at about 9:42 PM, thieves took advantage of the store’s good intentions. A corn hole game board, positioned outside so kids could play while enjoying their yogurt, was stolen by three men.

I’m in line at the grocery checkout when the woman behind me knocks me on the shoulder and says, “No.” She grabs my tub of Yoplait yogurt.

“Get this instead,” she insists, handing me a tub of Greek yogurt. “Then write about it.”

Such are the fans of this stuff. Most of it sold in the United States is imported not from Greece but from New York and Washington State. There’s evidence the Greeks didn’t even invent it. It might be Turkish.

Frozen yogurt, the trendy, soft-serve cold treat that took off in the late 1980s and early ’90s before fading somewhat into obscurity, has regained its retail relevance.

Self-serve frozen yogurt stores have begun to pop up all over the country, with metro Toledo no exception.

“There is definitely a very sustained resurgence and consumer interest in frozen yogurt. That really is a phenomenon that is coast-to-coat and it has been in full swing for the last six years,” said Corey Henry, vice president of the National Yogurt Association, which is based in McLean, Va.

If you were a local dog whose owners were staying home over the long holiday week and happened to be in downtown Menlo Park today, you were one lucky dog. Lynn Macy, owner of The Pet Place, was dispensing frozen yogurt, a perfect summer treat for hot dogs. The Australian Shepherd Winston slurpped his Yoghund  on the sidewalk in front of the store while Hector and Bella enjoyed in-store service.

Lynn and husband Marc have owned The Pet Place for 20 years, and the store’s fan are legion. (Just check out all of the enthusiastic support on Yelp.) And in the drive to “shop local,” you can’t get more hometown — Lynn and Marc are lifelong residents of Menlo Park.

Freeziac, a locally-owned frozen yogurt shop, is coming to Woodbury.

The shop will be opening as early as Friday, July 6, in the former Blockbuster video rental store at Valley Creek Road and Radio Drive.

Co-owner John Mallon of Minneapolis said it will be his sixth Freeziac in the metro area. Others are located in the Mall of America, Burnsville and Bloomington.

The self-service shop will offer 10 flavors of yogurt and a variety of toppings. Customers will be charged by the weight of their yogurt sundaes.
